Quantum Mechanics and Spirituality

July 20th, 2007 · No Comments

Some of you are aware of my fascination with the movie/documentary What the Bleep, Down the Rabbit Hole.  Some of you may have received this from me, and I hope you have watched it.

If you are scientifically inclined like me, you will greatly enjoy this documentary.  It is technical, but educates in layman’s terms about theories of quantum mechanics.  To be sure, it is extremely interesting.

The goal of this documentary is to explore how our reality is affected by quantum mechanics.  What scientists have found, researching particle theory, is that particles behave with a different set of rules than the Newtonian atomic theories.  Basically, atoms have certain laws, and particles have a completely different set of laws.

Now, that doesn’t sound very interesting, does it?  It sounds pretty dry, Michelle.  Thanks for bringing that to my attention.  But its not.  And here is why.

Although I am going to completely botch this, the basic principle is that a particle behaves a certain way based upon observation.  Particles, in and of themselves, exist in multiple locations at once.  One partical, multiple locations.  Once an “observer” observes the partical, so to speak, the partical then “chooses” a location based upon the observer.

Particles, of course, are subatomic; the most basic of structures.  The observer’s expectations and experiences determine the location of the particle, and from there, the atomic structure is created.  So, for example, when you wake up in the morning, based upon experience, you know that when you get out of bed you will step onto the floor.  However, in the unobserved state, the floor, a bunch of atoms, is really particle potentiality.  But your perception and observation create a potential situation that the floor does exist.  Now, this stuff isn’t about spirituality.  This is science, and has been known for some time.  It’s a conundrum, and quantum physicists continue to work this out.

What are the real ramifications of such a discovery? Since particles are pure potential, since they exist in multiple locations at once, the result is that perception, or, observation, creates the “reality” of the particle.  This is a good thing; we don’t want to be waking up each morning not sure whether the floor is going to be there or not.  But what is more important here is the fact that a particle, in its unobserved state, is pure potential.

This discovery leads scientists down a metaphysical path, which, by default, extends to spirituality.  So, quantum physicists have been working with/talking with spiritual and religious leaders regarding their findings.  You call it God, we call it particle potential.

If the result of the location/state of a particle is based upon an observer, then that means that the reality of that which you see is really based upon your projection of perception onto that particle.  Now, this is the result of the studies conducted that determined that particles behave under a different set of laws.  This means that, at some point, you ultimately do have control over what you see, feel, hear, think, etc.  You are not a slave to your mind.

This is where spirituality comes in.  Is there really much difference in the questions that we have regarding spirituality and the particle potential theory?  If everything that exists is atomic, and the underlying particles are pure potential until we perceive them, then the implication is that we basically “create our own reality”.

So, my spiritual path has led me down a more scientific approach, rather than a fluffy approach.  I purchased and watched this movie some months ago, and read texts that are more spiritual in nature, but basically, have the philosophy of the same, without the science.  The two complement each other nicely.

We have been given the opportunity to at least see, so to speak, if we can indeed create our own reality based upon the particle potential theory.  Some of you out there may be saying, “Michelle, this is a bunch of bullshit”.  Okay, maybe.  But I am the type of person that is willing to try….I guess I am more scientific, as my curiosity precludes me from not trying, because it doesn’t hurt anything to see what comes of this theory.

The other movie that everyone knows about, The Secret, is the fluffy, non-scientific version of the same principle.  Frankly, I don’t recommend watching it.  It’s kinda stupid, after you watch What the Bleep.  It’s also not anything new in terms of philosophy.  The whole basis is the “Law of Attraction”.  If you can remember those three words, then don’t buy the movie, because that’s all it is about.  The Law of Attraction is basically the observation and perception of your reality based upon your experiences.  The bottom line is that you can change your reality by changing your perception of the world.

How do you do that?  Well, first of all, what you see today is based upon what you knew before.  Duh.  And thank god for most of that.  I mean, if Starbucks weren’t across the street every day, then this would be a sad world indeed.  The deeper issue is the manifestation of your current experiences based upon your past beliefs.  Let’s face it; emotions are created and felt based upon what you are thinking.  And your thinking is always rooted either in the past or in the future.  Have you ever actually observed your thoughts?  I have quite a bit.  What I am doing right now is based upon my past experience, belief, and thought.  And that’s not bad.  But what if I feel like crap today, or what if I have an overwhelming feeling of dread each and every day?  The thought that something bad is going to happen, because, my life has been full of bad things that have happened?  Well, again, “that which we think about, we become”, as my grandfather used to say.  Same thing; Law of Attraction, particle potential, whatever you want to call it.

You have to change your thinking to change your world.  Now, I am going down a spiritual path that leads me outside of the “self”, the identification of “Michelle” into a realm of one, or, more like, the Unified Field Theory.

More on that later, since that delves deeper and a little bit away from the scientific theories presented above.
