Pointy hair? I don’t THINK so!

November 30th, 2007 · 3 Comments

I am under tremendous stress.  More than I have been under before, I guess in a different way.  As you all know, my job is completely different.  I have changed my title six times in one month due to the growth of my position over the last five weeks.  I have settled, finally, on Director of Professional Services.  What the hell does this mean?  It means that we have a sales area, and once they sell some kind of service or solution, the project passes to my department.  My “project managers” will oversee the project and all of the resources that are on the projects from start to end.

Since we have not really built our business model yet, pretty much everything listed above falls under me as it stands.  I am inundated with daily bullshit, and do not have time to actually step back and PLAN my department.  I am beginning to understand why I thought my bosses were all idiots.  I always thought they should know everything that I know and more; frankly, that’s not true at all.

For example, I do not give a shit about how HR runs their business, as long as they don’t get in my way.  So when my resources come to me and bitch about stuff that HR does, it makes my life difficult.  I send them to the right person, and I bet my resource thinks I am an idiot.  Bottom line;  I don’t have time to even think about eating.  I don’t eat all day.  I don’t have time to think about what HR does daily.  I just don’t care, unless they are affecting my business.

I am also a bit irritated because I have to go fix three months’ worth of expense reports for one of my resources who didn’t do it right from the beginning.  I don’t have an assistant to do it for me; so now, I have to take hours out of my day to go fix it.  This AIN’T gonna happen again.

We have been a boutique place for a long time.  Now, we have experienced exponential growth.  So it’s not that they have been idiots before; they have just been able to get in each other’s way without it causing major problems.  Additionally, lax departmental policies and a lack of a business model has worked since the business has been so small.  Not anymore.  So, there are four of us really in charge over there, including myself, and we are encountering “resistance”.  That’s okay.  That’s what we were hired to do; be mavericks and shake things up.  It’s just that I have so much on my plate, and believe me, I have delegated a shitload of it.

Anyway, that’s about all I got for now… Sorry there wasn’t anything funny in it.

I can sympathize. Hang in there - you’ll work your ass off and eventually things will get under control.

Avi: Thanks. Yeah, Friday’s power lunch got me kinda down, but I am going to take it with a grain of salt. I haven’t talked about that one; typical corporate crap.

Wayne: Thanks… It’s going to be very busy till the end of the first quarter…

Come on man. You know you want to say something!
