Wayne brought the new google desktop to my attention. It is closer to where I think personal computing is going for the typical desktop and laptop.
It is a browser with widgets in it; things like news, technology, fun stuff, television, etc. It’s highly customizable, and you can add your own stuff. You can collapse everything so that it looks like little categories on your screen, or you can maximize them.
It also has an rss feed reader, and incorporates google reader which allows you to subscribe to rss feeds.
There is also a sidebar that you can add some really cool stuff to. I use the labpixies TV, which has the history channel, cnn, discovery, cartoon, blah blah, and you can watch it on your laptop streaming over the internet. Labpixies also has a radio and a bunch of other stuff.
I have my local weather, a gadget that has news from multiple sources(labpixies), todo list, slashdot, daily literary quote, google reader, the sidebar with a notepad in it and some other stuff, Wiki… There are a ton of things to add.
Check it out. It’s really cool!
